JANUARY 23, 2002

Speaker: Gloria Berthold
Title:  Plant Choices

    Ms. Berthold will give a talk on plant choices for  landscaping.  We will learn how to pick annuals, perennials, and shrubs for our home gardens.    Her talk will be accompanied by slides and handouts.    Gloria did a terrific job on her presentation last year on home landscaping, so don't miss this program.

 Gloria is an independent landscape designer and a landscape design faculty member of the GW Center for Professional Development of George Washington University.  She writes monthly gardening columns for two magazines, and has been featured in Southern Living.  She also owns an Elkton, Maryland company called Marketing Outsource Associates that introduces local vendors and purchasing entities.
 

FEBRUARY 27, 2002

Speaker:  Alexej “Sasha” Borkovec, Ph.D.
Title: Rock Gardening in the Washington D.C. Area

Dr. Borkovec, a founding member of the Potomac Valley Chapter of the North American Rock Garden Society, will speak about rock gardening in our area and your own backyard.   His presentation will be illustrated with slides.

Dr. Borkovec recently retired from a long career as a research chemist at Beltsville Agricultural Research Center (BARC), ARS, USDA and is a native of Czechoslovakia.  He has spoken and written extensively in both agricultural chemistry and rock gardening.   He also pioneered the construction of raised rock garden beds using newspaper walls.
 

MARCH 27, 2002

Speaker:  Gene Sumi
Title:  Preparing your garden for spring

A topic very appropriate for this time of year, Mr. Sumi will give us information how to prepare your lawn and garden beds for spring.  He will provide a spring checklist for homeowners to use.

Mr. Sumi is a Horticultural Technical Advisor at Behnke's in Beltsville, Maryland.  He is a Maryland Certified Professional Horticulturist and lectures at the Prince George's Community College.
 

APRIL 24, 2002

Speaker:  Harold Winters
Title:  Plant Introductions and Exploration

Mr. Winters will discuss the introduction of the New Guinea impatiens to the United States and other foreign and plant collecting trips he has taken for USDA.

Mr. Winters retired from USDA in 1980 but continues to work on plant breeding projects with rosemallow hibiscus and daylilies.  Mr. Winters has a masters degree from the Ohio State University and additional graduate studies in horticulture, botany and plant breeding from the University of Maryland.
 
 

MAY 22, 2002

Speaker:  Robert Stewart
Title:  Memories of Founding the Beltsville Garden Club

Dr. Stewart, with eight other founders, created our club in March 1952.  His presentation will include the early history of the club, such as why the club was started and background of other founders.

September 25, 2002

Speaker:  Susan Fugate
Title:  Special Collections at the National Agricultural Library- Pt. 2

Susan Fugate and her knowledgeable staff will show club members agricultural treasures housed at the National Agricultural Library in Beltsville, Maryland.  NAL is the world's largest library devoted to agriculture and other plant sciences.  Since our last visit in Septmember 1999, the library has gone through a major renovation and many new items from the special collections will be on view.

Ms. Fugate is the Special Collections librarian for the National Agricultural Library.  She is also a member of the Council on Horticultural and Botanical libraries.
 
 

OCTOBER 23, 2002

Speaker:  Beltsville Garden Club Members
Title:  50 Years of the Beltsville Garden Club-- A Birthday Celebration

As part of the club's jubilee celebration, the club will celebrate our 50th year with a program devoted entirely on our history and club members' memories.  The presentation will be a birthday party and include slides from the past 50 years, trivia about the club, live music, and much much more.
