Speaker: Gloria Berthold
Title:  A Mixed Bouquet of Landscaping Ideas

    Ms. Berthold will give a talk on a number of landscaping topics of interest to the home gardener:  landscape solutions for difficult sites; intimate garden spaces and special space; successful water gardens, texture and color in your landscape; and the right plant for the right space.  Her talk will be accompanied by slides and handouts.

    Gloria is an independent landscape designer and a landscape design faculty member of the GW Center for Professional Development of George Washington University.  She writes monthly gardening columns for two magazines, and has been featured in Southern Living.  She also owns an Elkton, Maryland company called Marketing Outsource Associates that introduces local vendors and purchasing entities.
 
 

FEBRUARY 28, 2001

Speaker: Phil Normandy
Title: Asian Plant Expeditions

    Phil Normandy, the Plant Curator at Brookside Gardens, will describe the results of a program to evaluate plants that were collected in China, Japan, and Korea, for introduction into American gardens.  Since the early 1980s, these specimens from plant expeditions have
been grown at Brookside by Normandy and other staff.

Speaker: Dr. Ronald Ochoa, USDA
Title: Plant Feeding Mites

    Dr. Ochoa is an acarologist with the USDA/ARS/Systematic Entomology Laboratory and an internationally recognized authority on mites, will review the various species of mites that are plant pests and those that can used as biological control agents.  Plant feeding mites are a major pest problem for agriculturists, horticulturists, and home gardeners alike.  They attack fruit trees, vegetable crops, and ornamentals.  They can also indirectly affect plant pests by attacking beneficial insects, such as bees.
 

APRIL 25, 2001

Speaker: Helmut Jaehnigen
Title:  New Cold-Hardy Camellias for Washington Gardens

    Helmut Jaehnigen is the buyer for trees, shrubs, and roses for all three of the Behnke locations.   A member of the staff since 1961, he joined the Behnke Nursery after employment as a nurseryman in Germany, Switzerland, and Sweden.   A native of Germay, he matriculated through German schools, finally achieving the degree of "Gaertnermeister" in Heidelberg in 1960.
 
 

MAY 23, 2001

Speaker:  Robert Trumbule, Maryland Department of Agriculture
Title:  Alien Invaders

    Bob Trumble will talk about invasive plants and insects affecting Maryland,
how to recognize some of the most problematic species, and some tips on management.  Bob has a Bachelors of Science in Conservation and Resource Development and a Masters in Entomology from University of Maryland at College Park.

    He works for the Maryland Department of Agriculture and is responsible for the Nursery Inspection and Plant Pest Quarantine program in the central and western Maryland regions.  In his free time, Bob is also an avid ornamental and vegetable gardener.
 

SEPTEMBER 26, 2001

Speaker:  Dr. John Lee-Cox, University of Maryland
Title:  Chesapeake Bay Preservation:  Nutrient Management in the Nursery, Greenhouse and Home Garden

This presentation will show how the professional grower and the home gardener can better manage the application of nutrients to achieve strong plant growth, while minimizing the escape of nutrients to the local environment and ultimately the Cheaspeake Bay. Dr. Lea-Cox received his undergraduate and master degrees in his native South Africa and his Ph.D. in Plant Physiology from the U. of Florida. Following a postdoctoral fellowship from the Kennedy Space Center, he joined the faculty of the U. of Maryland. He teaches courses in Greenhouse Crop Production and Nursery Crop Production, and has focused on Nutrient Management as an area of research.

Speaker: Dr. Steven Cohan, University of Maryland
Title:  Landscape Management...Beyond Mow and Blow

Dr. Steven Cohan will give a presentation on some of the newer techniques that are now being used by the professional landscapers to maintain landscapes. These techniques will be illustrated and explained so that homeowners can apply some of the best current practices to their landscape.   Information will also given on the best websites to visit for more tips on
landscaping.   Dr. Cohan is Professor of Practice in the Natural Resource Sciences &
Landscape Architecture Department at the U. of Maryland.
