Dr. Thomas Turner:

Turf Grass

The Beltsville Garden Club will hold its February general meeting on Wednesday, February 25, 2015 at 7:30 p.m. in the Multipurpose room of the James E. Duckworth School on Evans Trail in Beltsville, Maryland.

Dr. Thomas Turner, a top turf grass expert at the University of Maryland Department of Plant Science and Landscape Architecture, will speak on February 25, at BGC’s meeting at the James Duckworth School.

His topic is “Turf Grass You Will Want to Grow” which builds on his re-search on developing a sustainable fescue turf grass suitable for our climate.

After graduating from Penn State Univesity with a Ph.D. in Agronomy in 1979, Dr. Turner began work at the UMD as a turf grass extension specialist and researcher.

Dr. Turner will discuss how to select lawn grasses for various growing conditions; where not to grow turf grasses; characteristics of turf-type tall fescue, fine fescues, and zoysia grass; use of micro clover in lawns; management practices for successful maintenance; and best management practices for minimizing or eliminating pesticide applications.

Members are requested to bring a plant for the door prize table. Also, please bring sweet or savory refreshments to be served after the meeting. All contributions are gratefully appreciated.
